Welcome to December, the darkest month of the year in the northern hemisphere. It’s not surprising that all cultures and traditions in this area have celebrations involving lights or fires and feasting. We have displays of cookbooks from our extensive collection that you can check out for your holiday cooking.

Our December graduates will surely shine brightly on all around them. We wish them all the best as they leave us. Special thanks to our wonderful library student assistant Cassondra.

New Products in the Library include the Testing and Education Reference Center database. It has practice entrance exam questions for public safety jobs, for Accounting certification, Teacher Praxis exams, the GED, SAT, CLEP, LSAT, and many more. Also included are tools for assessing career choices, writing your resume, and interviewing.

GFCLearnFree is a resource that we’d like to reintroduce. This portal contains hundreds of free training tools for students and really any adult trying to function in the USA. Improve your computer keyboarding and mousing, understand how Excel spreadsheets work, get an overview of using social media tools, reading a transit map, and so much more.

STUDY AND WRITING HELPS

As everyone gears up for final papers and exams, here are some helpful tools for studying and writing. Remember we will have free snacks in the library during finals week, and therapy dogs in the mornings to boost your oxytocin.
Flashcards are a proven study aid that work best when presented randomly. This is hard to do yourself, so try one of these apps that let you create your own deck or use already created decks. For IOS or Android phones, try Quizlet. You can use Quizlet from a browser (laptop/desktop) as well. For iPhones, Tinycards is an award-winning flashcard app.
Plagiarism is a serious academic offense, so check your papers and reports before handing them in. Two of the best free tools you can use are: Dupli Checker which allows you to copy and paste in 1000-word passages of text; and Plagiarism Checker which allows you to search two phrases of text at a time from different parts of your document. It only works with the Google Chrome browser. These tools do not require uploading files or any particular format – just copy and paste your text passages. Your professor may have turned on a plagiarism checker in Blackboard, so look for this when you are about to upload your paper.
The library offers links to a citation creator called Noodletools that creates both in-text citations and sources lists in MLA, APA, and Chicago styles. It can be easier to use than MSWord’s built-in citation tool. Access Noodletools from the Library home page http://library.ivytech.edu/northeast You must create a free account with username and password, and then you can add sources directly from search results in the library databases! Even better, it offers a browser plug-in called “Archive This” that allows you to keep your sources organized for quick reference. It also has a smartphone app that will generate citations by scanning the ISBN on a book jacket with your phone camera!! It’s easiest if you set up your project first before using the App. When you create a sources list, choose your style (MLA, APA, Chicago) and ADVANCED which includes almost any source type: books, journals, websites, emails …

You can vote through April 20th for the People’s Voice awards just by registering, and you don’t have to vote in every category, just for what you like.

Time to give Mango Languages a try!

For those interested in learning another language, Mango Languages provides an excellent resource that is tremendously accessible to users of any learning level. Gone are the days of rewinding the same CD audio track, trying to follow along with a text simultaneously, or paying hundreds of dollars for interactive software with recurring subscription fees.

Mango Languages lets you choose from over 70 languages, allows you to learn on your time and at your own pace, and never loses track of what lessons you’ve already done. The intuitive, interactive layout lets you advance through stages of the lessons at will and useful functions such as repeating a word or phrase or displaying the literal translation in English are only a click away.

Each lesson includes placement tests to help you find which lesson to start on if you already have a background in a particular language. There are also lessons that are relevant to the culture associated with each language. If learning Mandarin Chinese, you may be interested in the lesson that discusses various ideas from Feng Shui. Learners of French will encounter a course on how to discuss the various wines and cheeses they may encounter when visiting France. Mango Languages also features some specialty languages that you may not encounter in other language learning programs such as Biblical Hebrew, Shakespearean English, and Pirate.

Mango also has foreign films that allow you to watch and view dialog in both your native language and the language you’re learning. You can also choose “Engage Mode” for films that break the film down into parts along with quizzes. Learning another language is never easy, but Mango Language has lowered that barrier to entry by making their program as accessible and user-friendly as possible.
